Just keeping track of some stuff I like
Hi - I have the latest WB & Icon packager, but not Object Desktop.

I'm using the bluetooth software from Widcomm and it places a hideous icon on my Desktop with the caption My Bluetooth Places.

It's a system folder and rightclicking on it doesn't seem to give any option for customizing it or deleting it. It just sits there being ugly.

Icon packager changes some of hte other system folders, but not all of them. I can't seem to change the Windows folder for example.

How can I force system folders to change their icons when rightclicking provides no options?

thanks very much for any help you might have for me!

you are probobly beyond this step, but from icon packager choose the 'icons and cursors' option and browse through, see if you can't find your bluetooth shortcut in there as an added system icon. if it's there, swap it out.. if not...

right clicking gives no options eh?
well.. *bump* i hope a developer can help

On the main part it will have a section called Include

Make sure you have checked off Custom Files, and then apply the icon package again and see if that changes it

ah ha.. i realized how you can do it through desktopx/iconx.. as for through icon packager alone, you might still be buggered- though i think stardock owes you the right to have that annoying icon skinned through IP.

iconx basically pulls your icons up to a new layer and hides the origional desktop, and in doing so gives you a new functionality. it should also allow the icon to be right-clickable no matter what it is. if you get your hands on desktopx/iconx, turn it on and enable icon x. tell it you want to see your desktop icons. you should now have iconx functional desktop icons, and thus that system icon will be right-clickable. choose properties >> iconx properties >> external image. in theory that will override any icon.. but i don't have a system icon on my desktop to test it out.

To change the My Bluetooth Places icon you have to make two changes to the registry since the icon shows up both in the My Computer display and also on your desktop. First search for the registry key {6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}. It should be under HKEY_Classes_Root. Expand this key and you should see another key called DefaultIcon. Click on that and then change the default value to the path of the icon you would like to substitute (note, if you are pointing to a .ico file, then write it as follows - path\filename.ico,0). There should be another key just above called {6af09ec9-b429-11d4-a1fb-0090960218cb}. Expand that and repeat the same process to the DefaultIcon key there. Refresh your desktop and My Computer views and voila! Custom icon bliss. I use iconpackager for most icons, but they still don't include a lot of common icons like this - rather sad if you ask me. You can use this same technique to change any desktop or my computer icons by finding the key numbers (known as CLSIDs) under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace. Enjoy the icon modding goodness!
